Why Atiku Supports a Single Six-Year Tenure and Rotational Presidency
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has suggested a six-year single term for the presidency and a system where the presidency rotates between regions in Nigeria to help strengthen democracy.
According to Famzigist, Atiku wrote to the National Assembly, asking them to start the process of changing the constitution to include these ideas. The letter, sent on August 30, 2024, was addressed to Senator Barau Jibrin, who is the Deputy Senate President and leads the Senate’s Constitution Review Committee.
Paul Ibe, Atiku’s Media Adviser, explained that these recommendations are meant to improve Nigeria’s democracy, especially as the National Assembly is already working on updating the 1999 Constitution.
One of the proposals would increase the educational qualifications required for political candidates. It also aims to stop violent takeovers within political parties and strengthen their internal structure.
Ibe further explained that these changes would reduce the chances of political parties breaking constitutional rules and electoral laws. The proposed amendments would encourage discipline and ensure political parties follow the laws, preventing chaos in the system.
