We’re Committing Resources to Technology to Guarantee Transparency and Speed Up Performance, Tinubu.
President Bola Tinubu stressed the crucial role of technology in combating corruption and improving government performance, labeling it as a force against fraud and irregularities. He made these remarks during a meeting with Bill Gates at the World Economic Forum Special Meeting in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
During the discussion, President Tinubu highlighted his administration’s investment in technology to promote transparency, accountability, and efficient public-sector operations in Nigeria. This investment aims to enhance service delivery to the Nigerian populace.
The president reiterated his strong commitment to implementing reliable technology systems, including support for a national consumer credit system and other vital government interventions. He acknowledged that resistance is often encountered when trying to strengthen systems and prevent misconduct.
In a statement released by his special media and publicity adviser, Ajuri Ngelale, President Tinubu emphasized that technology plays a pivotal role in combating fraud, corruption, and irregularities, and mentioned ongoing efforts to enhance technological capabilities.
“The initial resistance is always there. Corruption, self-interest, and fraudulent activities will always pose a challenge, but once you overcome that hurdle, there are immense benefits to be gained. The entire nation stands to benefit,” remarked the President.
Reflecting on his experience of leveraging technology to boost Lagos State’s revenue during his tenure as governor, President Tinubu highlighted his efforts in gathering and utilizing crucial data, which led to the establishment of an efficient tax system in the state.
“As governor of Lagos State, I encountered obstacles but managed to turn N600 million into over N8 billion. Currently, they are aiming for a trillion naira through technology in the state. There are no shortcuts; we must invest in technology, maintain focus, be diligent, and put in the hard work,” emphasized the President.
During his remarks, Mr. Gates briefed the President about a unified technological platform for identity management that can streamline diverse data sources. He emphasized the importance of data harmonization for effective planning, security measures, and tax efficiency.
“We are collaborating with Mr. Wale Edun, the Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance, on digitalization efforts. Before your tenure, there were scattered attempts at identity management with multiple systems in place.
“Now, there’s a plan to leverage MOSIP technology for this unified identification platform, enabling people to access digital benefits. We are already supporting this initiative and can provide further assistance,” Mr. Gates stated.
“With MOSIP ID, there’s a wide range of potential applications across all government payment programs. It enhances payment efficiency, promotes bank account usage, and ultimately, when universally adopted, simplifies tax collection. While this benefit may take a few years to fully realize, it will result in more bank accounts, increased financial inclusion, and efficient government payment programs,” remarked the former Chief Executive Officer of Microsoft.
Mr. Gates expressed confidence in Nigeria’s capability to handle this system and other related technological platforms, citing the abundance of talented youth in the country.
“I was impressed by the incredible work and growth of operations that I witnessed during my visit to the Microsoft office in Lagos. Nigeria has a wealth of talented individuals who can effectively manage these systems,” he added.
The entrepreneur also discussed high-yield seeds and a range of crops that hold promise for increased productivity and nutritional value across Nigeria’s regions.
He noted that countries such as the United States and Brazil have successfully utilized these seeds, which have undergone thorough testing and certification for safety.
“There are no safety concerns regarding these seeds. We believe it’s important to support the Minister of Agriculture’s efforts in this area,” Mr. Gates emphasized, highlighting the significance and value of this support.
In response to Mr. Gates’ remarks, President Tinubu stated, “We will examine this closely and delve deeper into it. I am particularly proud of Nigeria’s youth; their enthusiasm and creativity with technology inspire us as we push forward with our reform initiatives for their future prosperity. This is Nigeria’s moment to realize its full potential.”
