Toke Makinwa shares her wish to remarry and refutes claims of hating men
Nollywood actress and media personality Toke Makinwa has shared her thoughts on giving marriage another shot, even as she recently turned 40.
In a recent interview with British-Nigerian host Madame Joyce, the 40-year-old opened up about her perspective on marriage, calling it a “beautiful institution” despite its complexities.
Makinwa was previously married to businessman Maje Ayida in 2014, but their marriage ended in 2017 following public controversies.
Reflecting on her past, she expressed hope for future love, acknowledging that while marriage is challenging, it can be incredibly rewarding when shared with the right person. “Marriage is tough, but with the right person, it’s one of the most wonderful experiences,” she shared.
On her desire to remarry, Makinwa explained, “People often assume I dislike men or that I’m a feminist who criticizes men. But I’ve been married before, and marriage is a beautiful thing.”
She compared marriage to sibling relationships, saying, “At first, it’s exciting when family visits—matching pajamas, catching up on lost time. But after a few days, it’s like, ‘Please, when are you leaving?’ That’s how I saw it.”
Makinwa also recalled the emotional highs and lows of her previous marriage, saying, “There were days I couldn’t wait to tell him about my day, and other times I thought, ‘How did I end up with this idiot?’ It was tough, and it didn’t last. But I still appreciate the institution, and I do want to get married again.”
Though she hasn’t remarried yet, Makinwa remains open to the possibility. “I’m not rushing it. Maybe it’s just not the right time yet. When it happens, I just hope I don’t have too many wrinkles,” she laughed.
Makinwa also addressed rumors about secretly marrying her rumored partner, Farouk Umar, calling the speculations untrue. She clarified that a recent event mistaken for a wedding was actually a Thanksgiving celebration. “Farouk is my best friend,” she emphasized, confirming their close but platonic relationship.
