Tinubu on 64th Independence: “We must leave our errors behind as we move forward.”
President Bola Tinubu emphasized on Tuesday that the reforms introduced by his administration are crucial for Nigeria to fulfill its potential and become one of the world’s leading nations, as ordained by God.
Tinubu highlighted that in order to achieve this, it is vital not to carry past mistakes into the future.
In his National Address to commemorate Nigeria’s 64th Independence Anniversary, the President stated that these reforms are essential for securing a better future.
“Our Independence Day gives us an opportunity to reflect on the nation’s progress and renew our dedication to building a stronger country for both present and future generations of Nigerians.
“As we celebrate 64 years of progress, it’s important to also acknowledge the missed opportunities and errors of the past.
“If we are to reach the greatness that God has destined for us, we must not allow past mistakes to hinder our progress moving forward,” Tinubu said.
He noted that his administration assumed office at a pivotal moment for the country.
“The economy was struggling, and our security situation was severely compromised.
“We stood at a critical crossroads, forced to choose between two paths: reforming for growth and prosperity, or continuing with the status quo and risking collapse.
“We chose to reform both our political and defense structures,” Tinubu explained.
He appealed for patience, asking Nigerians to endure the sacrifices necessary for nation-building, noting that early signs of progress are beginning to emerge. “We are starting to see light at the end of the tunnel.”
Reflecting on history, Tinubu recalled that 64 years ago, Nigeria’s founders chose democracy as the vehicle to achieve their vision of a great nation, one that would lead Africa out of poverty and ignorance.
They aspired for Nigeria to be a symbol of hope, leading the continent out of underdevelopment, he added.
“More than six decades later, Nigerians at home and abroad can see how far we’ve come in realizing the dreams of our founders.
“The world is benefiting from the resilience and talent of the Nigerian people—from our intellectual contributions to our achievements across various fields, including science, arts, technology, and infrastructure.
“While the vision of our founders is still in progress, each day we work to bring it closer to reality.
“Though it’s easy to dwell on our unfinished tasks or past missteps, we must never lose sight of how far we’ve come in keeping this country together,” he stated.
Tinubu noted that Nigeria has survived crises that have led to the downfall of many other nations. He pointed out that the country has learned to manage its diversity and navigate its differences, steadily working towards a more united and perfect nation.
“Despite numerous challenges, we remain a resilient, united, and sovereign country,” Tinubu affirmed.
He once again asked Nigerians to remain patient as his administration continues implementing reforms designed to boost the economy and lay the groundwork for a brighter future.
He wished all Nigerians a happy Independence Day celebration.
