The Senate passed a bill that will increase judicial officers’ salary by 300%.

On Wednesday, June 5, the Senate approved a bill to significantly increase the salaries, allowances, and benefits of judges in Nigeria by 300 percent.

This decision came after the Senate reviewed and accepted a report from the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters. The report was presented by Senator Mohammed Monguno (APC – Borno North).

Earlier, on March 20, the House of Representatives had already passed this bill, which includes a monthly salary of N5.39 million for the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN). The bill also sets monthly salaries of N4.21 million for Supreme Court Justices and N4.48 million for the President of the Court of Appeal.

Moreover, Justices of the Court of Appeal will receive N3.73 million per month, while other top judicial officers, such as the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court and Presidents of various courts, will earn N3.53 million monthly.

The bill also provides for additional benefits, including leave allowances, a nightly estacode of $2000 when traveling, duty tour allowances, and a severance gratuity of N80.78 million after completing their tenure. Judges will also have the option to take a motor vehicle loan to be repaid before their term ends.

Senator Monguno noted that everyone who participated in the public hearing on the bill supported it. He emphasized that the bill aligns with Nigeria’s Constitution and Senate rules, and is necessary due to current economic conditions and high inflation.

He explained that the bill is innovative because it not only increases basic salaries but also considers the unique administrative needs of the judiciary. He argued that appropriate and fair compensation will support judicial independence and integrity, allowing judges to focus on their professional duties without financial worries. This, in turn, will improve their decision-making and professionalism, and maintain public trust in the judiciary’s impartiality.

Senator Monguno also highlighted that good pay is essential to attract and retain skilled and experienced judges. Adequate remuneration ensures that retired judges can enjoy financial security and comfort after years of service. The proposed increases are included in the 2024 Appropriation Act.
