The Port Harcourt refinery starts its operations
The Port Harcourt Refinery, overseen by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) through the Port Harcourt Refining Company Limited (PHRC), has resumed operations following extensive rehabilitation and modernization efforts.
Located in Alesa, Eleme, Port Harcourt, the refinery boasts a total refining capacity of 210,000 barrels per day (bpd) and includes two operational units, which were originally established in 1965 and 1989. The older unit has a refining capacity of 60,000 bpd, while the newer unit processes 150,000 bpd.
The rehabilitation of the refinery was funded by a $1.5 billion loan secured by the Federal Government in March 2021 under the leadership of former President Muhammadu Buhari. The contract for the rehabilitation was awarded to Tecnimont S.P.A, an Italian company and subsidiary of the Maire Tecnimont Group.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Malam Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd., is leading the team to oversee the first petroleum product lifting from the newly rehabilitated refinery.
