Super Falcons’ Olympic Dreams Dented by 1-0 Loss to Spain
Nigeria’s Super Falcons must win their last group match against Japan and hope for favorable results in other matches to have a chance of advancing as one of the best third-place teams in the ongoing Olympics in Paris.
The Super Falcons suffered a 1-0 defeat against Spain on Sunday, marking their second straight loss by the same score. This leaves them at the bottom of Group C.
The team struggled to finish off their few scoring opportunities, and Spain’s Alexia Putellas scored a decisive free-kick in the final moments of the game. They had a similar loss to Brazil in their opening match.
In another Group C match, Japan scored two goals in injury time to beat Brazil 2-1. Momoko Tanikawa scored a stunning goal in the 96th minute, helping Japan come back after being down 1-0. Saki Kumagai had earlier equalized with a penalty in the 92nd minute.
This result means that Japan and Brazil are now tied with three points each after two matches.
