Super Falcons Narrowly Defeated by Brazil in Olympics Opener

The Super Falcons lost their opening game of the 2024 Olympics to Brazil, with a score of 1-0 at the Bordeaux Stadium in France on Thursday.

A goal from Gabi Nunes in the 37th minute was enough for Brazil to secure the win and deny Nigeria a point in their first match of the tournament.

Nigeria’s head coach, Randy Waldrum, chose to start Chinwendu Ihezuo as the center forward instead of Asisat Oshoala, who remained on the bench.

Team captain Rashidat Ajibade tried to spark the attack by setting up Ihezuo with a precise cross and forcing Brazil’s goalkeeper, Lorena, into a save. Christy Ucheibe also had a chance but couldn’t score.

Brazil’s star player, Marta, thought she had scored in the 36th minute, but her goal was ruled out for offside after a VAR review.

Shortly after, Nunes took advantage of a defensive lapse and scored, getting the ball past Nigeria’s goalkeeper, Chiamaka Nnadozie.

Nigeria will now prepare for their next group match against Spain on Sunday.
