Seyi Law praises Tinubu for removing fuel subsidy despite ongoing challenges
Nigerian comedian Oluwaseyitan Aletile, better known as Seyi Law, has expressed his support for President Bola Tinubu’s decision to abolish the fuel subsidy.
In his inaugural speech, President Tinubu declared that the government could no longer afford to subsidize fuel, formally known as Petroleum Motor Spirit (PMS). This move has had a significant impact on Nigerians, resulting in a notable rise in the prices of goods and services.
Seyi Law acknowledged the challenges caused by this policy but emphasized that it would ultimately benefit Nigerians in the long run.
The comedian also argued that the fuel subsidy should have been scrapped much earlier. He reflected that if it had been removed back in 2012, during Goodluck Jonathan’s administration, when Tinubu’s opposition party had protested against the removal, Nigerians would have already moved past the financial strain.
“Fuel subsidy should have ended a long time ago. Had it been removed in 2012, we would have gone through the difficult phase, and by now, we would be in recovery,” Seyi Law remarked.
He recalled being the only celebrity who opposed the anti-fuel subsidy movement in 2012, referencing comments by Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Nigeria’s former Finance Minister, who had warned at the time that the country couldn’t continue borrowing just to cover salaries.
