House of Reps Announce 50% Salary Cut to Support Hardship

The House of Representatives decided on Thursday to support the Federal Government by reducing their salaries by 50% for six months, contributing N648 million to help with food security and reduce food costs across the country.

The lawmakers also urged Nigerians to be patient with President Ahmed Tinubu’s administration as it tackles the challenges and hardships citizens face.

The House instructed its Committee on Appropriation, Humanitarian Affairs, Finance, and Budget to ensure these measures are followed.

This decision came after a motion by Hon. Ibrahim Isiaka (APC, Ogun State) titled “An appeal to the proponents of proposed nationwide protest to maintain peace, eschew violence and open the windows for meaningful engagements with the government at all levels in order to address their issues,” during a plenary session in Abuja.

Isiaka acknowledged that while Nigerians have the right to peaceful assembly and protest, the House is making a plea for understanding, unity, and constructive dialogue to resolve the nation’s issues.

He emphasized the importance of peaceful engagement with the government and encouraged the proponents of the planned nationwide protest to choose patience, dialogue, and collaboration over conflict.

Isiaka highlighted the need for all stakeholders to uphold democratic principles, respect human rights, and follow the rule of law. He expressed confidence that through peaceful engagement and dialogue, the nation can work towards a better future.

He acknowledged that Nigeria faces significant challenges such as insecurity, unemployment, and poverty, which affect every citizen. He noted that these issues are not unique to Nigeria but are common worldwide.

Isiaka stressed that change takes time, patience, and collective effort. While peaceful protest is a democratic right, it is also essential to allow the government to build on the progress already made.

He called for constructive dialogue, peaceful solutions, and national unity to overcome the challenges and build a better Nigeria. He urged fellow Nigerians to consider the broader perspective, act with wisdom, and support efforts towards a more stable and prosperous nation.

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu supported the motion, stating that protest is not the solution to hunger. He emphasized the need for sacrifice and urged lawmakers to support government policies aimed at improving citizens’ lives by donating half of their salaries.

Ahmed Jaha (APC, Borno) added that it takes time to fix long-standing issues. He encouraged Nigerians to be patient, emphasizing that tough times do not last forever and that there is hope at the end of every struggle. He urged young people to give the government a chance, noting the policies and programs designed to benefit them, such as school and student loans.
