Reasons Dakore Egbuson Chose Acting Over a Music Career

Nollywood actress Dakore Egbuson-Akande has shared why she shifted from music to acting.

She reminded people that she started out as a singer, with one of her songs being “Don’t Make Me.” Reflecting on her early career, she said:

“I began as a musician. Not everyone knows that. Honestly, I didn’t even realize I could act. I always imagined myself performing on stage because I loved singing. Acting came as a surprise, but it wasn’t far off from what I was meant to do. Music, acting, and even painting are all forms of artistic expression. I was naturally drawn to the arts, and even before acting, music was my first passion.”

Explaining why she transitioned from music to acting, Dakore said:

“Acting was an unexpected gift. When I was younger, I thought for sure I’d become a musician, then maybe a journalist, which is why I studied Mass Communication at university. But, as they say, ‘we make plans, and God decides.’

Looking back, it all makes sense because I’ve always loved expressing myself through music, dance, school plays, and public speaking. I’m thankful that I had the courage to pursue this path when entertainment wasn’t seen as a serious career. I followed opportunities that felt right for me and aligned with my faith.

At the time, some family members and friends doubted the sustainability of a career in entertainment. Now, I understand their concerns, but I was determined to follow my passion no matter what. It’s rewarding to see how far I’ve come, becoming well-known, and even more satisfying to see how entertainment is now respected as a viable career. I’m proud to have been part of changing that view.”
