Real Madrid player retires at 19 following struggle with rare infection
At just 19, Real Madrid academy prospect Marc Cucalón has made the difficult decision to retire from professional football.
This choice follows a challenging two-year struggle with a severe bacterial infection that complicated his recovery from a ligament injury suffered in September 2022.
Cucalón’s troubles began with what seemed to be a routine torn ligament sustained during a UEFA Youth League match. However, during surgery, a bacterial infection took root, leading to significant cartilage damage that would ultimately prevent any chance of a return to competitive play.
Despite undergoing numerous treatments and working tirelessly to recover, the young midfielder realized that stepping away was essential for his long-term health.
The decision is a heartbreaking one for Cucalón and La Fábrica, Real Madrid’s youth academy, where he had been seen as a promising talent for the future. Known for his leadership and a playing style similar to Xabi Alonso, Cucalón was highly respected by his peers and coaches. His coach, Álvaro Arbeloa, shared a heartfelt message, recognizing his talent and dedication.
Reflecting on his journey, Cucalón expressed deep gratitude toward Real Madrid and all those who supported him. “One must always overcome and keep fighting,” he wrote, pledging to carry the lessons of football into his future.
