Peter Obi Questions FG on Seizure of Presidential Jets
Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s Presidential Candidate in the 2023 election, has criticized the Nigerian Federal Government for not providing an explanation to the public regarding the seizure of Nigeria’s Presidential Jets in France.
He called the incident, which involved a French court ordering the seizure of the jets, an international embarrassment that reflects poor leadership at home.
In a series of tweets, Obi questioned the secrecy surrounding the acquisition and sale of these Presidential jets, which are national assets.
He pointed out that the news about the jets’ seizure highlights a pattern of failed leadership and disregard for the rule of law in Nigeria.
Obi expressed concern that, despite widespread opposition, the government proceeded with the purchase of a Presidential jet during a time of severe economic hardship for Nigerians.
He criticized the government for managing public assets as if they were private property and for spending $100 million on a jet in a country struggling with poverty, high rates of out-of-school children, and severe food inflation.
He also raised questions about the government’s handling of agreements, particularly in light of previous court rulings in the UK that affected Nigerian assets. Obi urged the Federal Government to be transparent and provide answers to the public on how the situation with the seized jets came to be.
