Peter Obi Prioritizes Poverty Alleviation Over Political Alliances Ahead of 2027 Elections
One of Nigeria’s key opposition leaders, Peter Obi, has emphasized his primary concern is to alleviate poverty among citizens. The former governor of Anambra state declared he would not participate in any political alliance aimed solely at state capture, as observed in current politics.
With the 2027 general elections approaching, there has been speculation about potential alliances between leading presidential candidates. However, Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, clarified his stance in a recent interview in Onitsha, Anambra state, reported by The Punch.
“How do we pull people out of poverty? That should be our concern, and not forming a mega party,” Obi stated. “But if forming a mega party is to be able to provide all these things I have illustrated, then I am all for it. But if it is for state capture, so that politicians can take power and continue with the consumption, consumption, consumption that we are seeing today, I will say no. But if it is to move the country to production, production, production, then I will say yes.”
In related news, Obi expressed sympathy for President Bola Tinubu following a recent fall at Eagle Square, advising his supporters to focus on constructive issues rather than mockery.
