NLC Calls for Immediate Reversal of Petrol Price Increase
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called for an immediate reversal of the recent fuel price increase. They argue that it is inappropriate for the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to set fuel prices in a supposedly deregulated market.
The NLC, led by President Joe Ajaero, urged President Bola Tinubu’s administration to roll back the price hike, stating that previous increases have not led to any positive outcomes for Nigerians.
In a statement, Ajaero pointed out that it’s wrong for a private company like NNPCL to dominate fuel pricing, as it contradicts the principles of a free market. The NLC expressed frustration with the repeated price hikes, claiming that this has become the government’s main focus without offering relief or solutions to help Nigerians cope.
The statement also noted that the price increase is making life even harder for citizens, pushing more people into poverty and causing job losses. The NLC believes this will negatively impact the economy.
They urged the government to reverse the fuel price increase and questioned the lack of a clear plan for the country’s economic growth. They emphasized that the government should provide a clear vision for the future instead of continuing with short-term policies that don’t benefit the public.
