NAFDAC Cautions Bakeries: Prohibition on Saccharin and Bromate in Bread Making
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a stern warning to bakeries across the country to stop using harmful substances like saccharin and bromate in bread production.
During a News Agency of Nigeria Forum, NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, highlighted that bakeries found using these banned additives would face serious consequences. “Our post-marketing surveillance plays a vital role here,” she said. “We regularly inspect products and respond to complaints from the public. Several bakeries have been shut down for using bromate, and any bakery suspected of such practices will be closed immediately.”
Prof. Adeyeye also revealed that numerous water production facilities had been shut down for failing to meet hygiene and quality standards.
She emphasized the importance of NAFDAC’s Regulatory Inspection Directorate in maintaining safety and quality compliance. “This directorate ensures that manufacturers stick to the approved processes and formulas. Post-registration surveillance helps us catch any changes and protect consumers from unsafe products,” she explained.
