Immigration Officer Suspended for Asking Money from Traveler at Airport
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has suspended an Assistant Superintendent of Immigration II (ASI II) after he was caught on video asking a traveler for money.
Kemi Nandap, the Comptroller General of NIS, shared this update through the Service Public Relations Officer, Kenneth Udo, on Thursday in Abuja.
Nandap stated that the officer’s actions, shown in a viral video, do not align with the NIS’s professional standards and values. She strongly condemned the behavior, saying it undermines the ongoing efforts to improve service quality.
The officer is now suspended indefinitely while disciplinary actions are being reviewed, following legal and Public Service Rules. The video, titled “This is how immigration officers treat tourists in Nigeria,” shows the officer soliciting money from a traveler.
Nandap emphasized that such behavior does not reflect NIS’s dedication to hospitality and courtesy. She assured that the NIS remains committed to rooting out corruption and maintaining high service standards in line with the Federal Government’s ‘Renewed Hope Agenda’.
She also mentioned that electronic gates (e-gates) are being set up at international airports to make travel smoother and prevent similar incidents. Nandap encouraged the public to report any misconduct or corruption by NIS officers.
