FG Begins Sale of 50kg Rice Bag at N40,000 to Nigerians with NIN
In response to the ongoing food crisis, the Nigerian government has begun selling 30,000 metric tonnes of rice at a subsidized price of N40,000 per 50kg bag. This initiative aims to reduce the impact of high food prices that have persisted for over a year. The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, officially launched the program at the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.
Senator Kyari acknowledged that the program is part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s efforts to prevent hunger among Nigerians.
He mentioned how global events like the COVID-19 pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine war, and climate change have disrupted food supplies, leading to increased food prices and a decline in living standards worldwide, including in Nigeria.
The Minister emphasized that this food intervention is a timely measure to address these challenges. He praised the government’s actions, including the distribution of 42,000 metric tonnes of various food commodities and the current release of 30,000 metric tonnes of rice to Nigerians.
To ensure transparency, the government has set up processes to make sure the rice reaches those in need. These include limiting sales to one 50kg bag per person and verifying buyers through their National Identification Number (NIN) and phone numbers to prevent fraud.
Senator Kyari urged Nigerians to support the Tinubu administration in achieving the goal of food security for all. He expressed confidence that the introduction of this rice into the market would lower not only rice prices but also prices of other similar foods.
He concluded by asking Nigerians to be patient and trust that the President’s efforts to enhance food security will soon show positive results.
