#FearlessInOctober Rally: Protesters Put Forward Demands to Tinubu Administration
Omoyele Sowore, a prominent figure in the #FearlessInOctober movement, has presented a set of demands to the federal government on behalf of the protesters.
During a demonstration in Lagos on Tuesday, Sowore highlighted their primary request: the immediate release of all individuals detained during the #EndBadGovernance protests held two months ago, as well as those arrested during the #EndSARS protests in 2020.
Sowore stressed that the protesters expect the detainees to be freed by the end of the day.
“If the government fails to meet this demand today,” he warned, “we will announce our next steps.”
He urged the government to release all detained protesters, whether in Kaduna, Abuja, Katsina, or Kano. “The Federal Government should release them today,” he reiterated. “If by the end of today the EndBadGovernance and EndSARS protesters remain in custody, we will reveal our next course of action.”
The human rights activist, who is also a politician, expressed that the protesters are fighting for a new kind of independence. According to Sowore, the independence gained in 1960 was a different struggle. Now, he explained, they are battling for the liberation of citizens from the grip of the ruling elite, whom he accused of corruption and looting.
“Those who have intentionally made life difficult for our people—the looters and corrupt cabals, whether in the oil sector or elsewhere—are the ones we are standing against,” Sowore declared.
“Our true independence begins now,” he added. “The freedom we gained in 1960 was fought for by others. Today, we are fighting for a new form of independence, continuing what we began in 2019 with Revolution Now, because we believe only a revolution can save this country.”
