Cholera Outbreak in Lagos: Cases Rise to 401 with 21 Deaths Reported
Ikeja, Lagos – The Lagos government, represented by Kemi Ogunyemi, special adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on health, has reported an increase in suspected cholera cases to 401, with 21 fatalities.
The local governments most affected are Kosofe, Eti-Osa, and Lagos Island. This update was included in a statement signed by Tunbosun Ogunbanwo, director of public affairs at the state’s Ministry of Health, on Thursday, June 20.
Cholera, caused by the bacteria Vibrio cholerae, is a water- and food-borne disease leading to severe diarrhea and potentially death within hours if untreated. The disease is seasonal in Nigeria, particularly during the rainy season in areas with poor sanitation. Ogunyemi shared these updates after a meeting with the Lagos State Public Health Emergency Operations Centre, noting an increase in deaths from 15 to 21.
