Attempt to Unseat Tinubu Could Threaten Nigeria’s Unity

Former Kaduna lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani, has cautioned northern leaders against their plans to oust President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections, warning that this could harm national unity.

In an interview with Arise Television, Sani advised northern leaders to support Tinubu’s policies that benefit the North rather than seeking more political power.

He noted that there are efforts to use former President Buhari to rally northern political forces to undermine Tinubu’s administration. Sani stressed that challenging Tinubu’s government could destabilize the country, emphasizing that when Buhari was in power, no significant southern opposition sought to remove him.

Sani urged northern leaders to prioritize national unity over personal ambitions, suggesting they can rightfully seek power after Tinubu’s second term.

Additionally, Sani highlighted the need for northern leaders to focus on regional issues like insecurity and poverty. He pointed out that despite the North’s long political dominance, it remains underdeveloped due to poor governance and corruption.

Sani also called on the Tinubu administration to implement restructuring to address underdevelopment issues, suggesting that northern leaders should support Tinubu’s policies to tackle these regional challenges.

He mentioned that many key security positions are held by northerners, presenting an opportunity to address the region’s insecurity issues. Sani emphasized the importance of using political power to benefit the masses by addressing poverty and underdevelopment in the North, rather than enriching a few elites.
