APC Predicts Failure of Peter Obi and Kwankwaso Alliance for 2027 Elections

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has brushed aside concerns about a possible alliance between Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and Peter Obi of the Labour Party for the 2027 presidential election.

APC’s National Publicity Secretary, Bala Ibrahim, said in an interview with Punch that this potential alliance doesn’t worry the party. He believes it will likely fail, just as it did before the 2023 election. According to him, there’s a lack of trust between Kwankwaso and Obi, and neither would be willing to step down for the other in their presidential ambitions.

Ibrahim’s comments came after reports that Kwankwaso had expressed openness to being Obi’s running mate in 2027, though with some undisclosed conditions. This has led to talks about a possible merger between the NNPP and Labour Party.

Labour Party’s National Secretary, Umar Farouk, is open to the idea, saying a partnership could work if Kwankwaso sets aside his ego and teams up with Obi.

However, the APC remains unconcerned, believing such an alliance wouldn’t pose a serious threat to President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027. Ibrahim emphasized that the main issue is trust, which has hindered past attempts at forming an alliance. He stated that both Kwankwaso and Obi are too focused on their personal ambitions to successfully collaborate.

He went on to say that while the APC sees no real threat from this potential alliance, Kwankwaso and Obi are simply making noise because they recognize the progress the APC is making, and that the 2027 victory for the APC is certain.

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) National Deputy Publicity Secretary, Abdullahi Ibrahim, welcomed the idea of an Obi-Kwankwaso alliance. He said the PDP would support any effort to unite the opposition and help Nigerians escape the hardships under the APC government. Ibrahim emphasized that the PDP is still the major opposition party and is working to lead the way in challenging the current administration.
