Allegations of Underage Voting in Bauchi LG Election

In the local government election in Bauchi State on Saturday, there were reports of underage voters taking part. Photos showed children with ballot papers, waiting in line, and preparing to vote.

Videos also showed children voting at several polling units, including Maciya Polling Unit, Senior Primary School Polling Unit, Bunusai Polling Unit in Ningi West, and Ningi East Wards.

In an unexpected turn of events, Yunusa Muhammad of the African Action Congress (AAC) won the Papa Ward councilorship election. Held on August 17, 2024, Yunusa Muhammad received 1,156 votes, beating Ashiru Mohammad Papa from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who got 1,053 votes. Idris Mohammad from the All Progressives Congress (APC) finished third with 290 votes.

Muhammad Abdullahi Abubakar, the Returning Officer, confirmed the results, stating, “Yunusa Muhammad of AAC is declared the winner of the Papa Ward councilorship election held on August 17, 2024, as he met all legal requirements.”
