Aisha Yesufu publicly denounces Labour for ending the strike
Nigerian activist Aisha Yesufu has criticized the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) for calling off their indefinite nationwide strike.
The strike was launched to oppose the Federal Government’s refusal to approve a new minimum wage.
Starting on Monday, June 3, the strike had shut down public offices and institutions nationwide to protest the government’s stance on the minimum wage.
However, after an emergency meeting with government officials, including George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the labor unions decided to suspend the strike on Tuesday, June 4.
In a video shared on her social media, Aisha Yesufu questioned the effectiveness of the strike, stating it failed to achieve its goals.
She noted that despite the disruption caused, there was no significant progress towards an agreement on the minimum wage between the labor unions and the government.
Aisha expressed disappointment over the suspension, highlighting that many people faced difficulties due to the strike, such as missed flights and disrupted travel plans.
She also criticized the current minimum wage, arguing that N60,000 per month is not enough to cover basic necessities like food and shelter.
