Afenifere Urges FG to Act Quickly to Save Nigeria from Collapse
The Pan-Yoruba group Afenifere has voiced strong concerns about what they see as the near-collapse of Nigeria since President Bola Tinubu’s administration began.
In a statement released after their quarterly meeting on August 27, 2024, in Isanya-Ogbo, Ogun State, Afenifere, through Deputy Leader Oladipo Olaitan and Deputy Secretary General Alade Rotimi-John, said that the country’s current state is causing confusion among the people.
The group highlighted widespread issues such as severe hardship, hunger, persistent insecurity, high inflation, and massive unemployment, all of which have worsened the people’s situation since the administration took office.
Afenifere criticized the government’s reckless and indifferent handling of public funds, pointing out extravagant expenses like $100 million for purchasing an Airbus A330 jet for the President, plus $50 million to retrofit it. They also mentioned the $950 million spent on new armored SUVs for the President, $21 billion for renovating the Vice President’s residence, $90 billion for religious pilgrimage subsidies, and $10 billion for renovating the Presidential Lodge.
Afenifere expressed shock and disappointment over these lavish expenditures, noting that they have tarnished Nigeria’s international reputation. They are troubled by the government’s apparent tactics to distract and confuse the public while mishandling national issues.
