NISER and Other Institutions Are Considering Conducting Research on Palm Trees
A big research project called “PALM TREES” is happening, backed by important international groups like CLARE, UK International Development, and IDRC. It’s run by NISER, Lead City University, and the University of Lagos in Nigeria. The project kicked off with a meeting in Lagos.
“PALM TREES” aims to deal with extreme events like droughts and floods. It’s happening in six African countries including Nigeria and Ghana. They’re gathering input from many people to make sure their research is useful for society.
Professor Oloukoi from Lead City University explained why this project is so important during the meeting.
Professor Mayowa Fasona welcomed everyone to the program, saying that the workshop in Lagos marked the start of the research. The goal was to gather information from affected communities to improve the outcomes of the research. These outcomes include things like making knowledge networks more sustainable, creating fairer relationships between communities, practitioners, researchers, and policymakers, and achieving lasting change.
In talks with stakeholders, many challenges related to extreme events like flooding and heatwaves were discussed. These challenges were particularly highlighted in central Lagos and the slums. The researchers thanked the stakeholders for being open and providing valuable input, which they believe will greatly improve the research.
The upcoming stakeholders’ workshop will be held in Ilorin, Kwara State.
