AY faces backlash over remarks about the lack of support for men in Nollywood.
Ayodeji Makun, widely known as AY, has faced significant backlash for his remarks criticizing the perceived lack of support for male actors in Nollywood compared to their female counterparts.
On Monday, the comedian and filmmaker expressed his discontent, suggesting that men in the industry don’t receive as much encouragement as women do. AY provocatively asked, “Do we need breasts and buttocks to earn the support of our peers?”
The comment, intended to draw attention to his latest movie, The Waiter, appears to have sparked controversy, with many perceiving it as offensive. Critics online accused AY of using a “pity strategy” to promote his work while undermining the achievements of women in the industry.
Some social media users found his statement dismissive of the hard work and success of female actors. One user on X, @Winifred, criticized, “This reeks of desperation and ignorance. You can market your movie without belittling others’ efforts. Also, consider a BBL like Bob’s if that’s the route you want to take.”
Another, @UchayOkolee, commented, “Claiming Funke Akindele’s success stems from her physique is absurd. Are you implying their accomplishments are thanks to physical attributes? The world is already chaotic, Uncle. If it bothers you so much, you can always opt for surgery.”
Similarly, @Osumare Ayomi pointed out, “Femi Adebayo, Kunle Afolayan, Niyi Akinmolayan, and Kayode Kasum seem to be doing just fine without breasts. Perhaps the real issue hasn’t been identified yet.”
