Bode George criticizes Mahmood Yakubu, calling his performance a mockery
Bode George, a former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has voiced his disappointment with Mahmood Yakubu, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Speaking at his home in Ikoyi, Lagos, George criticized Yakubu for discussing lessons from Ghana’s presidential election, saying, “I’m ashamed of INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu. He used to do well, but now his performance is a joke.”
George also predicted that Nigerians would not re-elect President Bola Tinubu in 2027 due to growing dissatisfaction with his government. He argued that by 2027, the presidency would be vacant, as many people are unhappy. “The anger and hunger on the streets are almost equal,” he said, adding that the ruling APC is a “mix of odd people.”
On the internal issues within the PDP, George blamed the party’s problems on individuals focusing more on their personal ambitions than the collective good. He criticized former PDP National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, for poorly managing the party.
Despite these difficulties, George remained hopeful that the PDP would fix its problems before the 2027 elections. He reaffirmed his support for power rotation between the North and South. He explained, “Our party is like the Iroko tree because it has deep roots in our constitution. Section 7 (3c) of the PDP constitution calls for zoning and rotating party positions and elected offices.”
He emphasized that what belongs to the South should go to the North, and vice versa. This principle of justice and fairness is what motivated him to enter politics. He added, “We were the first to be elected in 1999 and were given guidelines for stability. Sadly, someone’s personal ambition to be president got in the way of the party’s collective interest, and that’s when problems began. We need to return to the principles that were given to us to bring back stability.”
