Sheikh Gumi offers his views on Tinubu’s proposed tax reforms

Islamic scholar and preacher, Sheikh Ahmad Abubakar Gumi, has expressed his support for the controversial Tax Reform Bills, calling them beneficial for all Nigerians, despite objections from northern leaders.

Reports indicate that the reforms have faced heavy criticism from northern governors, lawmakers, and traditional leaders, who argue that the bills could worsen economic challenges in the region.

This disagreement has fueled rising tensions between northern and southern stakeholders. The bills, which passed their second reading in the Senate last Thursday, have sparked a heated debate across the country.

In an interview with the Daily Post on Tuesday, Gumi shared his positive outlook on the tax reform package as a whole, while suggesting that the Value Added Tax (VAT) section, which has been a point of contention, should be reconsidered.

“The VAT issue is the only part that needs review; other than that, it’s a good package for everyone,” Gumi said when discussing the controversy.

Meanwhile, the Presidency has clarified that the bill is not intended to disproportionately benefit Lagos and Rivers States, as some have suggested. Instead, it is designed to improve the overall living standards for all Nigerians.
