Okonjo-Iweala announces WTO will host a special meeting to choose the next DG
The World Trade Organization (WTO) has declared that a special General Council meeting will be held to advance the process of selecting its next Director-General.
Ambassador Petter Ølberg of Norway, the Chair of the General Council, announced on Tuesday that the meeting will be scheduled for November 28-29, 2024.
According to the statement, the first day of the meeting will feature a presentation by the current Director-General, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, outlining her vision for the WTO, followed by a Q&A session. On the second day, members may have the opportunity to make a decision regarding the appointment of her successor.
It was previously announced on November 9 that Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala of Nigeria is the sole candidate for the position.
Okonjo-Iweala, who assumed leadership in March 2021, has focused on revitalizing the organization. Her current term is set to conclude in August 2025.
Director-generals of the WTO are selected through consensus among its 166 member countries.
