Kemi Olunloyo’s son reveals his experience with depression as he celebrates his 24th birthday

Olukayode Joshua Taiwo, son of the well-known writer Kemi Olunloyo, has shared an honest account of his challenges as he celebrates his 24th birthday.

To mark the occasion, Kemi Olunloyo shared heartfelt messages and cherished photos, expressing pride in her son’s dreams and ambitions. However, Olukayode took to social media with a more personal revelation, painting a picture of the tough realities he’s faced since moving to the United States a year ago.

In an open post, he described feeling isolated and mistreated by some family members, bringing attention to the gap between his own reality and their expectations.

Olukayode also expressed gratitude for his mother’s consistent support as he navigates these difficulties.

His candid words have sparked conversations around the complexity of family relationships and the struggles of adapting to a new country with a different culture.

He wrote: “Happy Birthday to me and to a year of living in America. Getting closer to my mid-20s feels daunting, especially with a growing sense of loneliness and the feeling that time is slipping by. Returning to a country I hadn’t lived in for 11 years, facing life here alone has been tough, especially after enduring mistreatment and depression from extended family back in Nigeria. Without any family, friends, or a support system, I’ve managed on my own. I’ve been homeless, lost multiple jobs, had car accidents, and been taken advantage of during some of my lowest moments. I even lost my first car to a reckless driver, faced court for the first time as a new driver without insurance, and have had to sleep outside or in my car, all while juggling three jobs and pursuing a modeling career. These experiences have tested my faith, but I’m writing this as something to look back on when things improve, to remind myself of the struggles behind the scenes. One day, I hope to share all I’ve been through in a book. Thanks to everyone for the birthday wishes, and here’s to 23. Needed to get that off my chest.”
