400 explicit videos land Equatorial Guinea’s Baltasar in prison

Baltasar Engonga, formerly the head of Equatorial Guinea’s National Financial Investigation Agency, has been detained in Malabo’s Black Beach Prison.

Reports reveal that the ex-anti-corruption official was recently arrested, facing allegations of recording over 400 sex tapes involving the spouses of prominent figures in Equatorial Guinea.

This scandal surfaced during a fraud investigation into Engonga, a 54-year-old economist, leading officials from ANIF to conduct an unannounced search of his home and office. There, they reportedly discovered CDs containing footage of his encounters with married women.

The release of some footage online caused a major media uproar, prompting President Obiang Nguema Mbasogo to fire Engonga. Presidential Decree No. 118/2024, dated November 4, outlined the reasons for his dismissal, citing “irregularities” in his job performance and “unacceptable” social and family behavior for someone in public office.

On Friday, a video circulating on social media showed Engonga in handcuffs, shackled at both hands and feet, during a court appearance.

French blog Afrikmatin confirmed Engonga’s official removal from his position on November 6, 2024, followed by his transfer to Malabo Central Prison, where he now faces corruption and embezzlement charges.

The online newspaper UGStandard reported that sex tapes began to spread on social media while Engonga was already held at Black Beach Prison on charges of embezzling public funds, as reported by state TV, TVGE.

In a recent report, fact-checking site Dubawa verified that Engonga was indeed arrested for corruption and remains detained at Black Beach Prison.
