AFCON 2025: CAF imposes fine on Libya, grants Nigeria 3 points and 3 goals
On Saturday, the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) Disciplinary Board granted Nigeria three points and three goals after a controversial qualifying match for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
This decision followed the cancellation of the game due to issues that impacted the outcome. CAF’s ruling is meant to uphold fair play in the tournament’s qualifying rounds and ensure the integrity of the competition.
With this decision, Nigeria’s standings have improved, giving the team a better chance to qualify for the AFCON. The game, originally set to take place in Libya on October 15, was officially forfeited by Libya due to breaches of AFCON regulations and the CAF Disciplinary Code.
CAF also imposed a $50,000 fine on the Libya Football Federation (LFF), with payment required within 60 days. This ruling has placed Nigeria closer to securing a spot in the 2025 AFCON, with two matches still left to play.
