UK Government Increases Proof of Funds Requirements for International Students
The UK government has introduced new rules requiring foreign students to show more money in their bank accounts to prove they can afford to study in the country.
Now, if you’re studying in London, you need to show that you have £1,483 per month for living expenses, while students outside of London need £1,136 per month. These amounts have gone up from £1,334 for London and £1,023 for other parts of the UK.
If your course in London is nine months or longer, you’ll need to have at least £13,348 in savings to apply for a visa. The government says these changes make sure foreign students have enough money to live on, similar to what UK students get through maintenance loans.
These new rules apply for each month of your course, up to a maximum of nine months, and will start for students arriving on or after January 2, 2025. If you’ve already paid for accommodation in the UK, you can subtract that amount from the total savings you need to show.
The financial requirements will keep being updated to match inflation and changes in domestic student loans.
