Peter Obi Urges Nigerians to Hold NNPCL Accountable on Fuel Subsidy

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has urged Nigerians to demand clear information from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) about petrol subsidy payments.

In a statement on Tuesday, Obi expressed concern over inconsistent reports about these payments, which have confused Nigerians about how the company is functioning.

He said, “Nigerians need to insist on transparency from the government, especially from crucial agencies like NNPCL, which seem to operate in secrecy. The mixed messages about subsidy payments have left people in the dark about what’s really going on. It’s surprising that NNPCL, which reported a N3 trillion profit in 2023, is now claiming financial difficulties in providing fuel.”

Obi blamed the ongoing fuel shortage and long queues on government mismanagement.

He pointed out that the difficulties faced by the $20 billion Dangote Refinery and other smaller refineries in getting crude oil, along with NNPCL’s search for external operators for its own refineries, highlight the administration’s incompetence.

He called for greater transparency from NNPCL regarding its operations, finances, and future plans, and criticized the government for not following the Petroleum Industry Act, which requires openness.

Obi insisted that the government should address these issues honestly and take responsibility for the situation.

“We must persist in uncovering the truth and holding those accountable. The Nigerian people deserve better,” he added.
