Fubara Declares He Won’t Lead While Bowing Down Amidst The River Crisis.
The Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, asserted yesterday his steadfast resolve to lead the state with dignity, undeterred by what he described as an intense campaign to undermine the essence of the state.
During a political clash with his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, Fubara earnestly appealed for the backing of all concerned citizens of the state to safeguard its integrity.
This declaration was made during a visit to the Ubima residence of former governor Sir Celestine Omehia in Ikwerre Local Government Area, where Fubara, alongside state elders, offered condolences on the recent passing of Omehia’s mother, Mrs. Ezinne Cecilia Omehia.
As relayed by his Chief Press Secretary, Nelson Chukwudi, Fubara highlighted that the purpose of the visit was to express solidarity and empathy towards Sir Omehia, who dutifully honored his mother with a fitting farewell.
He emphasized the importance of all genuine enthusiasts of the region stepping forward to be acknowledged in the endeavor to protect the essence of Rivers State.
“Those who profess their devotion to this locality ought not to be involved in any action, whether direct or indirect, that might regress our progress,” the governor was reported as stating.
He further remarked: “We will persist in backing any initiative that promotes the welfare of our beloved Rivers State.
“And I am pleased to reiterate, regardless of the quantity of individuals supporting me, I will align myself with the path of honesty.
I refuse, let me reiterate, I absolutely refuse to lead our beloved state from a position of submission (bending).
“If that was the intent, count me out. I will remain upright in guiding our cherished state and consistently uphold what is just.
“However, engaging in divisive politics will not lead us anywhere fruitful. Hence, I express gratitude that, at this juncture, a few among you comprehend that Rivers State is the collective heritage of us all. Consequently, we must unite in defending the essence of this state.”
Fubara also commented on the recent tanker fire incident on Friday, noting that it destroyed more than 120 vehicles and resulted in the loss of five lives.
He referred to the event as a “significant tragedy and deeply regrettable.”
Expressing his sentiment, he conveyed, “Today is a somber day for our beloved State. An incident occurred in Eleme, along the path of Indorama Petrochemical and Fertiliser Company Limited.
“A tanker and a tipper were involved in a mishap, leading to a regrettable event that caused substantial damage to the state.
“Upon visiting the site earlier today to ascertain the situation firsthand, I have been filled with sorrow ever since. Given the ongoing challenges within our state, this additional burden is truly disheartening.
“Yet, we must acknowledge that this incident stemmed from impatience. The tanker driver, aware of the road’s condition, acted hastily, resulting in a significant loss. More than 120 vehicles were completely destroyed, and five lives were tragically lost. It is a grievous outcome.”
He offered condolences to those who lost loved ones and those whose vehicles were irreparably damaged, emphasizing that the state government shared in their mourning and sorrow.
In his address, Sir Celestine Omehia conveyed gratitude, representing his family, to Governor Fubara, his team, and other companions, including individuals he referred to as seasoned elders, for their heartfelt support.
He stated: “I’ve resolved to embrace SIMplification. Wherever you (Fubara) lead, I’ll follow. Should you decide tomorrow that you’re no longer pursuing this role, I’ll likewise cease striving for any endeavor within Rivers State.
However, the Almighty who granted you this chance will also bestow upon you every ounce of insight, vigor, authority, and resources necessary to lead the inhabitants of Rivers State and beyond.”
“He guaranteed the Governor that a vast majority of the State’s populace, encompassing chiefs, elders, influencers, women, youth, civic organizations, and experts from every facet of society, were fervently praying and diligently supporting the triumph of his governance.
Omehia emphasized that the support and prayers of the people were crucial for his success, as he believed that being aligned with God meant being part of the majority, leading to continuous progress and achievement.
He encouraged the governor to persist in delivering effective governance, fostering a peaceful and prosperous environment for both current and future generations.
Recently, two state cabinet members, known for their allegiance to Wike, resigned following their reassignment by the governor. These individuals are Professor Zaccheaus Adangor, formerly the Commissioner of Justice and Attorney-General, and Isaac Kamalu, the former head of Finance, now reassigned to Special Duties and Employment, respectively.
Kamalu’s resignation cited the ongoing lack of peace in Rivers State despite previous efforts for reconciliation. He expressed his inability to perform optimally amidst discord.
Furthermore, Kamalu contested the governor’s claim of doubling the state’s revenue from N12 billion to N27 billion, stating that while revenue had increased due to policy adjustments, it hadn’t reached the reported figures.
Adangor also resigned, citing interference with his duties as the Attorney-General by the governor, which compromised his ability to serve effectively and protect his reputation.
Both resignations underscored the challenges faced in delivering quality governance amidst discord, highlighting the importance of a conducive working environment for effective service delivery.
