How Davido Fooled Everyone by Pretending to Be Poor in His Early Music Career
British-Nigerian singer and producer Maleek Berry recently shared an interesting story from his early career about how Nigerian music star Davido once pretended to be less wealthy when they were both starting out in the music industry.
In an interview on the ’90s Baby’ podcast, Maleek Berry talked about his experiences with Davido during their early days. He explained how they would go to a studio in Bermondsey, London, to work on music together.
Despite Davido coming from a wealthy family, Berry initially believed he was from a more humble background because Davido fit right in with the rest of them, who were living modestly. This impression changed when Berry visited Davido’s father’s mansion and realized just how rich Davido’s family was.
Berry recalled, “I remember when Davido only had about four thousand views on YouTube. When he came to London, I would take him to a studio in Bermondsey to record music. We got connected through one of his cousins on social media, and back then, Davido wasn’t well-known. We were just two Nigerian guys who loved making music.
“He acted like he didn’t have much money, but when I saw his dad’s house, I was shocked. I realized they were really wealthy.”
Berry also mentioned that it was Davido who later introduced him to another Nigerian music star, Wizkid.
