Why Flavour Chooses to Focus on African Music Instead of Afrobeats
Singer Chinedu Okoli, popularly known as Flavour, recently shared his thoughts on why he isn’t concerned about the widespread attention that Afrobeats artists like Davido, Wizkid, and Burna Boy receive.
According to him, while these artists are making waves in Afrobeats, his own style of African music is equally important and shouldn’t be overlooked.
Flavour emphasized that he doesn’t consider himself an Afrobeats artist, but his music still holds significant value in the African music scene.
He believes that different genres of African music, including his own, deserve recognition and respect for their unique contributions.
In a conversation on the Afrobeats podcast hosted by Adesope_shopsydoo on Instagram, Flavour pointed out that other African musicians, such as Fally Ipupa from the Democratic Republic of Congo and Diamond Platnumz from Tanzania, are also achieving great success in their respective genres.
He used them as examples to show that African music is diverse and thriving in various forms.
Flavour, a father of three, further stressed that Africans are excelling in many areas beyond just music. He called for broader support and encouragement for Africans in all fields, rather than focusing solely on the popularity of Afrobeats. This, he believes, would help uplift the continent as a whole.
Many of Flavour’s fans agree with his perspective, acknowledging that he has carved out a unique and respected niche for himself in the music industry.
They believe that his contributions to African music set him apart and put him in a league of his own.
