Atletico Madrid Signs Manchester City Striker Alvarez

Atletico Madrid has signed striker Julian Alvarez from Manchester City in a deal that could reach up to 85 million euros (about $93 million).

According to Atletico Madrid, they’ve secured the Argentine forward for the next six seasons. Spanish reports suggest the base fee is 75 million euros, with an additional 10 million euros potentially earned through bonuses.

Alvarez joined Manchester City from River Plate in January 2022 for just £14 million (16 million euros) and has since won two Premier League titles, a Champions League, and other trophies. He also played a key role in Argentina’s World Cup victory in December 2022 and won the Copa America in 2021 and 2024.

Alvarez expressed his emotions about leaving City, saying it has been a special two years where he grew both as a player and as a person. He scored 36 goals in 103 appearances for City.

Manchester City’s coach, Pep Guardiola, mentioned that while Alvarez is well-loved by the team, he is seeking a new challenge.

Atletico Madrid, under coach Diego Simeone, is making significant additions to their squad, including Robin Le Normand and Alexander Sorloth, as they aim to compete more effectively with Real Madrid and Barcelona after finishing fourth in La Liga last season.
