Catholic Bishops Criticize FG Reforms for Lack of Hope
The Catholic Bishops of Owerri Ecclesiastical Province expressed worry over the lack of progress from recent government reforms. Despite promises of improvement, inflation, hunger, and frustration are increasing.
In their statement from a two-day meeting at Sacred Heart Pastoral/Retreat Centre, Orlu, Bishops Most Rev. Lucius Ugorji and Most Rev. Augustine Echema highlighted that Nigeria is struggling with significant social and economic issues, causing widespread hardship.
The Bishops pointed out that the hoped-for improvements from the current administration’s reforms haven’t materialized. Instead, inflation has soared, and issues like hunger and discontent are worsening. They noted that while the government has urged people to endure tough times, leaders themselves aren’t setting a good example with their spending.
The Bishops acknowledged some progress in certain areas but expressed concern that without effective leadership and national unity, the country risks missing out on further development.
They also emphasized that although peaceful protests are a valid way to voice concerns, they alone can’t solve the country’s deep-rooted problems and could even harm the fragile economy if prolonged.
They called for Nigerians to reflect on their collective responsibilities and stressed that improving governance requires both strong leadership and active citizen participation.
They criticized past regimes for their lack of continuity and vision and urged current leaders to earn the public’s trust by improving living standards and governance.
Finally, regarding the Supreme Court’s recent decision on local government autonomy, the Bishops urged state governments to hold transparent local elections to enhance grassroots development and democratic participation.
They also encouraged citizens to reject corruption, be aware of their rights and responsibilities, and resist any attempts to intimidate them.
