Lagos Protest Turned Violent: How Hoodlums Disrupted Demonstrations
On Sunday, a peaceful protest at Gani Fawehinmi Park in Ojota, Lagos State, was disrupted by troublemakers on its fourth day. The protest, which had been going smoothly, started to heat up around 10:30 a.m.
Tensions rose when a lawyer named JP advised protesters to leave due to President Bola Tinubu’s recent speech. Despite this, a group led by 70-year-old Adegboyega Adeniji from Peace Action Transformation wanted to keep protesting.
The police tried to convince the protesters to leave, but soon after, a group of individuals—whom the protesters claimed were hired to cause trouble—appeared and began forcing them out.
By 11:30 a.m., the situation had worsened, with the troublemakers driving all the protesters out of the park. The police have since been stationed at the park.
Earlier, security agents had limited the protesters to the designated area at Gani Fawehinmi Park, and the protesters had complied. In the past few days, the police had used tear gas, which drew criticism from civil society groups.
