FG Suspends Import Duty on Rice and Flour for Essential Food Items

The Nigerian Federal Government, through the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), has decided to suspend import duties on rice, flour, wheat, and other essential food items. This move aims to lower the high food prices in the country and address the severe hunger many Nigerians are facing.

Mr. Adewale Adeniyi, the Comptroller-General of NCS, announced that the government is focused on tackling the rising costs of food to alleviate hunger. He explained that global inflation is affecting countries around the world, including Nigeria. To make essential food items more affordable, the government is removing import duties and taxes on them.

The NCS is working to implement this change smoothly and has also improved export processes to help Nigerian products reach international markets more effectively. New tools like the Advanced Ruling System, Authorized Economic Operator, and Time Release Study have been introduced to boost trade, support the economy, and create opportunities.

Farmers, artisans, and entrepreneurs will benefit from quicker access to global markets, which will help their families and communities. The NCS is also collaborating with other agencies to prevent the smuggling of arms and dangerous weapons through land, sea, and airports. They believe that collective effort and peaceful progress are crucial for strengthening borders, avoiding disruptions to the supply chain, and promoting stability.

In these tough times, Mr. Adeniyi urged all Nigerians to work together with resilience and cooperation. He expressed gratitude to those who have chosen peace and dialogue, emphasizing that their engagement is vital for overcoming current challenges and building a better future.
