LP Warns Self-Proclaimed Chairman About Contempt of Court Risks
The Labour Party (LP) has cautioned Callistus Okafor, who is falsely claiming to be the party’s National Chairman, against actions that could land him in jail for contempt of court.
On Friday in Abuja, Obiora Ifoh, the LP’s National Publicity Secretary, responded to Okafor’s claim of chairmanship. Earlier, Okafor had announced himself as the National Chairman at a press conference, despite not being part of the 2014 National Convention of the Labour Party.
Ifoh stated that this claim follows a recent Federal High Court judgment in Abuja, which validated the Labour Party’s Nnewi Convention and confirmed Barrister Julius Abure as the National Chairman.
He described Okafor’s actions as theatrical and claimed that he is out of touch with the current state of the party, which has moved past his influence following two successful National Conventions.
Ifoh reminded Nigerians that Okafor had previously attempted to declare himself National Chairman in 2021 but failed in both the High Court and the Appeal Court. The Court of Appeal had clearly ruled against him, stating that he could not use a Consent Judgment to claim the chairmanship and had dismissed his case with costs, which he has not yet paid.
Ifoh expressed surprise that Okafor is once again challenging the Appeal Court’s decision.
