36 Governors’ Pledge to Defend Lives and Property Amid Ongoing Protests
Thirty-six state governors, gathered under the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), reaffirmed their commitment to improving security at the local level.
This pledge followed a briefing from National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu about a planned nationwide protest from August 1st to 10th, which has increased national tension.
Mallam Ribadu promised to support the governors in strengthening local security measures. In a statement by NGF Chairman and Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, it was noted that the NSA updated the governors on the current security situation and the rising protest demands.
The governors expressed their gratitude to the NSA and reiterated their dedication to enhancing security.
Local Government Autonomy was a major topic at the meeting, but no decision was made regarding the Supreme Court’s ruling on the autonomy of the 774 local governments.
The communique did not address any deferment of the ruling but mentioned the governors’ support for the NBA and the Attorneys General from all 36 states.
It also noted that the governors received an update from the Attorneys General on the Supreme Court’s decision regarding local government financial autonomy.
The meeting, which started at 9 pm at the NGF Secretariat in Abuja, lasted until after 2 am. The agenda included updates on the United Nations General Assembly, the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC), and various other topics.
The communique highlighted discussions on the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Program, with updates from the Minister of Health and Social Welfare.
The governors welcomed the new World Bank Country Director and his team, who presented ongoing programs like HOPE, Food and Nutrition Security, and SPIN.
Additionally, the NBA updated the governors on leadership changes and initiatives, emphasizing their commitment to defending democracy and rule of law. The governors praised the NBA’s role in good governance and pledged continued support.
The meeting was attended by governors from various states, along with deputy governors from Enugu and Borno.
