180 Rep Minority Caucus Members Urge Nnamdi Kanu’s Release
180 members of the House of Representatives Minority Caucus have united in calling for the release of Nnamdi Kanu from custody.
Representative Obi Aguocha, who represents Ikwuano, Umuahia North, and Umuahia South, initiated the motion for Kanu’s release. The Minority Caucus of the 10th House of Representatives unanimously supported this motion during their meeting in Abuja.
Aguocha urged his fellow representatives to take a clear stance on the issue of Kanu’s detention and seek a political solution for his release.
The caucus includes members from various parties: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with 115 seats, Labour Party (LP) with 35 seats, New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) with 19 seats, All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) with 5 seats, Social Democratic Party (SDP) with 2 seats, Young Progressives Party (YPP) with 2 seats, and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) with 2 seats.
Aguocha stressed the importance of a united position within the minority caucus, noting that resolving Nnamdi Kanu’s case is vital for national peace, stability, and unity.
He called for immediate and strategic discussions with key stakeholders to advocate for a peaceful and political resolution, which is crucial for Nigeria’s socio-political landscape.
Aguocha emphasized the benefits of resolving the situation through dialogue and reconciliation rather than prolonged legal battles and confrontation. He believes a political solution could enhance national integration and restore trust among various communities.
“The opposition parties have taken a decisive stand on Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the planned protest, insecurity, the dilapidated infrastructure, and the economy.
“The influential caucus’s adoption of this position on Mazi Nnamdi Kanu follows my recent visits to former President Muhammadu Buhari, successful mobilization of 50 colleagues from all parties, and the Southeast caucus of the National Assembly. Additionally, the Southeast Governors forum has also called for Nnamdi Kanu’s release.
“This call to action by my colleagues highlights the crucial role legislative bodies play in promoting peace and stability in the nation. I remain committed to advocating for justice, equity, and harmonious coexistence throughout Nigeria.”
