Bukayo Saka Explains the Meaning of His Yoruba Name
Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka recently discussed his Nigerian heritage.
In a BBC interview, the 22-year-old football player highlighted the importance of his Nigerian roots and explained the meaning of his Yoruba name.
Saka was born in England to Nigerian parents and has always embraced both his English and Nigerian identities.
As a graduate of Arsenal’s Hale End academy, he has consistently celebrated his Nigerian culture and background.
During an interview on BBC Five’s Football Daily Show, Saka was asked about his connection to Nigeria.
He said, “It means a lot to me. Growing up with Nigerian parents while living in England, both cultures are very important to me.”
When asked about his Yoruba name, Saka explained, “It means added joy.”
He added, “I like my name. I believe my grandma gave it to me. I’ll need to check with my parents to be sure, but I think that’s right.”
