Hardship and Pain in Nigeria: Anglican Bishop’s Call to Tinubu

AKURE — Bishop Stephen Fagbemi of the Anglican Diocese of Owo in Ondo State expressed deep concern over Nigeria’s economic challenges, stating that they have caused significant pain and frustration among Nigerians. He urged President Bola Tinubu to urgently tackle both the security issues and the economic difficulties affecting the nation.

During his address at the third session of the 14th Synod at St Stephen’s Church in Ipele, Owo, Bishop Fagbemi emphasized the severe impact of the current economic hardship.

He warned that if immediate and effective measures aren’t taken to mitigate the economic crisis, there could be a surge in crime rates across Nigeria. The country has become increasingly difficult to live in, with many citizens leaving in search of better opportunities, often finding themselves in challenging situations abroad.

The past year has been particularly tough for Nigerians due to the sudden removal of the petroleum subsidy and the instability of the foreign exchange rate. These actions have led to severe economic difficulties, with rampant inflation and skyrocketing prices of goods and commodities.

Feeding families has become a struggle for many, with only a few wealthy individuals remaining relatively unaffected. Bishop Fagbemi called on the government to make greater efforts to diversify the economy, pointing out that high unemployment rates have left many graduates jobless and the future looking bleak for numerous Nigerians.

Despite these economic struggles, Nigeria continues to borrow money while the political class remains unaffected, enjoying substantial salaries that disregard the hardships faced by ordinary citizens.
