Senator Orji Kalu Supports Cost-Cutting Through Part-Time Legislature

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, who chairs the Senate Committee on Privatisation, has called for a shift to a part-time legislature at both the federal and state levels.

Senator Kalu, representing APC-Abia North, believes that this change would cut government expenses and increase public trust in the political system.

The former governor of Abia shared these views in an interview posted on his verified Facebook page over the weekend.

He suggested, “It would be beneficial if my fellow lawmakers and Assembly members agreed to meet for three months to amend the constitution first.”

Kalu proposed that legislative bodies could meet four times a year, with provisions for emergency sessions if needed.

This approach, he argued, would lead to more efficient governance without the need for full-time legislative work. “All legislative houses in Nigeria, not just the Senate and the House of Representatives, should be part-time,” he added.

Kalu also suggested regional government as another way to save money.

“If we adopt regional government, the same ministers and legislators would serve. I’ve been thinking about how we can save money to run Nigeria because the country needs it,” he explained.

He urged the President and the National Assembly to consider these legislative changes, emphasizing their potential benefits for the nation.

Kalu also addressed the misconception that senators receive excessive pay, stressing the need for constitutional amendments to enable part-time legislative sessions.

“This will build trust and bring relief to the Nigerian people,” Kalu concluded.

This reflects Senator Kalu’s ongoing efforts to reduce government costs and create a more efficient and trustworthy political system in Nigeria.
