Why Labour Party May Struggle in EDO 2024 According to Sergius Ogun

Sergius Ogun, a key figure in the Labour Party, a lawyer, and a two-term House of Representatives member, shares his thoughts on what Mr. Olumide Akpata, the LP candidate for the Edo State governorship election, needs to do to win. Here are the highlights from the interview:

On the controversial social media stunt involving a man cutting off a chicken’s head and invoking the party chairman Abure’s spirit:
Ogun views these antics as a typical part of politics but condemns the extreme act of cursing Abure. He stresses that politics should focus on real issues like education, health, economy, and security rather than insults or wishing harm on others.

On claims that Julius Abure is trying to sabotage Akpata’s candidacy:
Ogun doubts the accuracy of these claims but acknowledges that Abure might have personal issues with Akpata. Ogun emphasizes that such internal conflicts should be resolved within the party, not through public rituals or spectacles.

Efforts to resolve internal party conflicts:
Ogun highlights the involvement of the party’s national leader, Peter Obi, in reconciliation efforts. He believes that most issues can be resolved at the higher levels of party leadership and that it is not his role, as a former candidate, to interfere.

Advising Akpata:
Ogun mentions that he has offered advice to Akpata but is unsure if it has been heeded. He notes that after the primary, it is typically the candidate’s responsibility to engage with aspirants and party leaders to unify the party.

On collaborating with Akpata if he changes his approach:
Ogun expresses uncertainty about whether it’s too late to mend relationships, given that many of his followers have left the party due to the events that transpired. He acknowledges Akpata as a good person but questions if those who remain loyal can be convinced to support him after what happened.
