Shehu Sani Reacts to Supreme Court’s Ruling on Local Government Autonomy in Nigeria
Senator Shehu Sani has responded to the Supreme Court’s decision on the autonomy of local government administration in Nigeria. The former Kaduna Central senator pointed out that some local government (LG) chairpersons might still seek guidance from their governors after receiving their allocation alerts.
Sani made this observation while reacting to the Supreme Court’s ruling that LG allocations must be paid directly to their accounts, bypassing state governors. He shared his thoughts on X (formerly known as Twitter), saying, “Your Excellency Sir, I received the alert. What should I do with it?” He emphasized that despite the ruling, many LG chairpersons might still act as if nothing has changed when their accounts are credited directly.
Nigerians have shared their reactions to the Supreme Court’s ruling on LG autonomy. Some suggested that to resolve this issue, the federal government should take over the conduct of LG elections and hand it over to INEC for transparency. Others mentioned that the EFCC should ensure accountability of the funds received by LG chairpersons.
There were also calls for the abolition of State Independent Electoral Commissions (SIECs) in favor of elections conducted by INEC to ensure the independence and proper functioning of local governments.
